While the top 64 golfers in the World are playing at the WGC Accenture Match Play in Arizona, the rest of the tour heads south of the border to Mexico. Greg Norman’s El Camaleon Golf Club is this week’s PGA Tour stop. This short course (6,923 yards) will require accurate driving and solid iron play. Last year, Brian Gay held off Steve Marino by 2 shots thanks in part to his 3rd round 62. This event will be seen on tape delay on the Golf Channel this week. Everyone’s attention will be on the Match Play event. This tournament also only distributes half the FedEx Cup points as a regular event.
Let’s take a look at the favorites and other golfers to watch this week.
Players I’m taking a shot on:
Brian Gay 20-1: The defending champ has been very solid this year despite his missed cut last week. In his other four events this year, he’s finished in the top 20 each time. Very accurate driver. Take him.
Steve Marino 28-1: Marino is still looking for his first PGA Tour victory. This is a weak enough field this week for him to make his break-through. He’s a very consistent golfer who is due for a win.
Dean Wilson 45-1: This will be Dean’s second crack at El Camaleon. He finished 36th here last year, but has the game to do a lot better at this course. He’s made 5 consecutive cuts and I give him a very good chance to be in the mix come Sunday.
Long Shot:
Chris DiMarco 50-1: Chris broke through last week with his best effort in a few years with a t13 at the Northern Trust Open. He ranks 12th in driving accuracy and 11th in scrambling this year. He’s fully healed from shoulder surgery and has been getting better each week.
